This study investigated how oxygen transfer influences Escherichia coli growth in laboratory shake flasks compared with a 50-liter fermentor. Multiple shake flask designs were evaluated to determine which most closely reproduced large-scale fermentation performance. Bellco 598 baffled shake flasks produced growth patterns and nutrient utilization that closely matched those observed in the fermentor under the conditions studied, demonstrating their suitability as a laboratory model for fermentation research and process development.
